Registration for the Tarifa Pro Kite Tour 2014 was held today at the Best Pro Center at Los Lances Beach for what will be the seventh stop of the 2014 PKRA World Tour. For the first time since 2008, Tarifa, Spain welcomes back the PKRA to its beaches that are widely regarded as the epicenter of kiteboarding in Europe.
Attracting multitudes of kiteboarders from around the globe with its consistent winds, eclectic vibe and unspoiled natural beauty, Tarifa is also home and training ground to many of the world’s top kiteboarders, making it a perfect venue and idyllic setting for a world-class event.
In total 53 riders representing 18 nationalities registered to compete in the disciplines of Freestyle and Big Air. The sport’s elite are present and will continue to battle for the world titles, as well as for the €48,000 in prize money.
Located at the point where the Mediterranean and Atlantic Oceans meet, the area is known for its strong winds and can offer up a variety of wind strengths and directions to offer optimal conditions for each discipline for competitors and the thousands of spectators that are expected to be present for the event.
Also being held during the upcoming days, conditions permitting will be the 2014 Virgin Kitesurfing Armada Spain. Led by 2013 World Champion Gisela Pulido and Sir Richard Branson, it’s aim is to break the world record for the ‘largest parade of kitesurfers,’ as well as to raise money for charity.
With a stellar forecast for the coming week, the 2014 Tarifa Pro Kite Tour will kick off tomorrow with either the Big Air competition or the Spanish qualifiers for the single remaining wild-card entry into the main freestyle event. Stay tuned to the PKRA Facebook page and Twitter feeds throughout the event period for daily start times, updates, and results.
Tomorrow riders will meet at the beach at 10:30 am for the first official riders meeting where the competitors will be briefed on the plans for the day.
