Bielefeld/München/Riva del Garda, 06.05.2014. The organizers of the BIKE
Festival Garda Trentino are very positive about the 2014 festival: The trade
fair sold out and attracted in the region of 35,000 visitors: The Rocky
Mountain BIKE marathon powered by Vaude saw a new competitor record
when 2,300 people signed-up to take part. And the records didn’t stop there,
the Scott Junior Trophy this time round set a new record with 300
registrations being received. The Specialized SRAM Enduro Series, which is
on its second visit to Riva, was even booked out with a fantastic 350
registering to take part. “The event has developed really well. It has been
able to successfully combine the professional and amateur sides of the sport,
as well as offering every visitor the perfect mix of sport-related aspects,
lifestyle and party elements”, is how the Managing Director of the agency
responsible for the organization of the event, Mathias Ley summed it up. The
dates for the next festival in the coming year have even already been
decided: From the 1st to the 3rd of May, 2015, the BIKE Festival Garda
Trentino will be back in Riva.

BIKE Festival Garda Trentino powered by MINI 2014

On Saturday morning at 7:30 on the dot, the starting signal for the highlight
of the festival, the Rocky Mountain BIKE Marathon powered by Vaude, was
given. In the elite group tackling the Ronda Extrema route which is 93.93
kilometres long and rises to 3,813 meters, there were the defending
Champion Alban Lakata, Olympic champion Jaroslav Kulhavy, European
Marathon Champion Kristian Hynek, the current German Mountain Bike
Marathon Champion Robert Mennen, as well as the Swiss rider Urs Huber.
After the elite group had started, followed the roughly 2,300 amateurs on to
the Ronda Extrema, Grande (75.70 km / 2,822 m.a.s.l.), Piccola (44.79 km /
1,523 m.a.s.l.) and Facile (28.63 km / 702 m.a.s.l.).

The Swiss rider Urs Huber from Team Bulls won the Ronda Extrema in the
elite group with a time of 4:29:34,2 minutes. Second was the Portuguese
rider Tiago Ferreira from Team Protek and third went to the Olympic
champion Jaroslav Kulhavy. Though it has to be said that it did not look like
that at the third refreshment point as Kristian Hynek from the Topeak Ergon
Racing Team was in the lead, followed by Kulhavy. However, it would seem
that both riders took a wrong turn on the final stretch of the course and this
allowed those pursuing them to take over the lead. The defending Champion
Alban Lakata who was participating in his first race of the year due to injury
finished in eight place, but was very satisfied with his performance on the
whole: “That was a “dress rehearsal” to see how the leg would hold up. And
it worked out very well – it’s just that bit of form that is missing, that
toughness that only comes with riding races is still missing”.

Among the ladies, Sally Bigham from Topeak Ergon Racing Team was able to
defend her title from the previous year and won the 93.93 kilometres course
in a time of 5:40:27.5 minutes. Second place went to the Austrian Verena
Krenslehner from the Conway Racing Team with 5:59:42.8 minutes. And
roughly 5 minutes later, the third placed Sabine Sommer from Team
www.sportlehrer.at ARBÖ Freistadt crossed the finish line.

The Rocket Man did it again!
It was again not possible this year to better the time set by Wolfram
Kurschat at the Canyon Knack den Kurschat powered by Ergon. The current
German Champion in mountain time trials and on the road needed 4:11.1
minutes to complete the 1,080 meter course “Strecke am Bastione”, at over
207 m.a.s.l and an average incline of 20 percent. This was the time to beat.

The evaluations were differentiated between professionals and amateurs
riders and between men and women. The fastest among the competitors
was the amateur rider Austrian Klaus Steinkeller with an overall time of 4
hours, 12.8 minutes, around 1.7 seconds behind Wolfram Kurschat. “I
wouldn’t have been able to ride any further at that pace”, said Kurschat after
crossing the finish line. That’s why I’m happy that it was over after around
1.1 kilometres. I have to say that it was really close to just finish ahead of
the second-place finisher”. The delighted winner was Klaus Steinkeller: “I
didn’t think my chances were great on this course because I don’t like tight
turns. It’s important to me that I compete against well-known riders,
because you know where you’re really at then.”

Specialized SRAM Enduro Series

The Specialized SRAM Enduro Series is taking place for the second time at
the BIKE Festival Garda Trentino powered by MINI. The race was sold out
this year with 350 competitors lining up for the start. The weather gods
weren’t kind on race day as it simply poured down constantly on the riders
and the course. The freakish weather also resulted in the third stage for the
ladies being cancelled for safety reasons after the fourth stage had already
suffered the same rain-soaked fate. The remaining five and/or four stages
still offered plenty of potential for exciting and action-packed racing:
Because of the tight stage times, the slightest riding mistake could prove
extremely costly, so absolute concentration all the way through was vital.
The young French rider, Nico Lau, adapted the best to the wet and slippery
conditions. With an overall time of 7:23.42 minutes, he had over 5 seconds
to spare over the second placed Ludovic May (SUI – Canyon Factory
Enduro), who was followed into the finish by René Wildhaber in third. The
fastest female rider was once again Anneke Beerten who, with a time of
8:11.42 minutes, crossed the line 10.95 seconds ahead of Ines Thoma and
also finished ahead of Raphaela Richter (GER – Radon Factory Enduro) in
third. In the masters category, Remo Heutschi (SUI – gravityunion.ch) was
able to build on his overall lead and was first across the line ahead of André
Kleindienst (GER – Bergamont Hayes Factory) and Walter Martinschitz (AUT –
mountainbiker.at).

Excitement at the Brügelmann City Eliminator

With the City Eliminator, the BIKE Festival Garda Trentino powered by MINI,
welcomes its newest side-event. The qualification races began on Thursday
morning, before the finals took place in the evening right in the middle of
Riva. The renowned parkour constructor Diddie Schneider once again came
up with something very special: he integrated two or three aspects into what
was actually a rather simple course which tested the concentration, tactics
and parkour technique of the competitors. Among those taking part were
well-known names such as European Champion and World Championship
runner-up Daniel Federspiel, the multiple German Champion in fourcross
Johannes Fischbach as well as the runner-up from the Ladies’ World
championship Nadine Rieder. Recording a time of 1:06.47 minutes Johannes
Fischbach got the better of Daniel Federspiel who took second place with a
time of 1:08.19. Sabine Stampf was the winner among ladies with a time of
1:15.35 minutes, closely followed by Nadine Rieder with a time of 1:15.70
minutes.

Fun race on the Pumptrack

There was lots of fun at the Canyon Pumptrack powered by mtb-academy.
On the wave slide, you only got around the circular course by stretching and
bending the legs. The guru when it comes to riding technique, Stefan
Herrmann, gave some tips during training. The top dirt biker Timo Pritzel
and the multiple German Champion in fourcross Guido Tschugg had a fun
race against each other during their race, but together, they only managed
fourth place. Each round consisted of one lap of the pumptrack with a flying
start. There were two laps completed all together and the fastest lap was
counted. The top three was made up of Benedikt Last with a time of 7.81
seconds, Tobi Engelmann with 8.11 seconds and Simon Kirchmann with 8.46
seconds.

The Next Generation of Riders going Full Throttle

A new record was also established for the Scott Junior Trophy with 300
registrations being received. The young competitors between the ages of 3
and 14 years old, started on a round course of up to 8 kilometres with
different difficulty levels. Prizes were awarded in six age groups. At the
presentation ceremony on the BIKE stage at the finish, the kids were
enthusiastically cheered by all present. For the top three in each group there
were trophies and fantastic prizes from Scott.
